Teacher and School Board Trustee
adds Administration to Duties
Sandra Nichols, Speech and Language Specialist for Santa Cruz City Schools and trustee for Pajaro Valley Unified School District serving students in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, has accepted an administrative position with Spreckels Union School District in Monterey County.
Now in her 28th year as an educator in California public schools, Nichols will assume the duties of Coordinator of Special Education for Spreckels on a part-time basis, while maintaining her current part-time teaching assignment in Santa Cruz. She continues her work as a member of the PVUSD school board after having been elected in 2000 and reelected in 2004.
A career educator and 20-year member of the California Federation of Teachers, Nichols recently organized a coalition of Santa Cruz County education leaders to lobby legislators and draw attention to the threat to California public education caused by decades of funding neglect. Her group, Campaign Support Our Schools (CampaignSOS.org), actively worked to defeat Propositions 74, 75 and 76, which threatened teachers and public school funding.
As an education writer, Nichols has authored over 60 essays for local publications since 1997. Her 2003 essay on the California High School Exit Exam, published in Bedford/St. Martin's California Dreams and Realities, Third Edition, is currently being studied in California universities and community colleges. Her web site, www.Education-Matters.com, has been online since March 2001 and is now listed on internet directories in Central America, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Spain and Malaysia.
