Candidate Statement

Name: SANDRA NICHOLS

Ballot Designation: Teacher/Administrator/Trustee

Occupation: Teacher, School Board Vice President, School Administrator

I am a teacher with a vision of excellent schools.

I see schools that welcome all students in safe, healthy learning environments. I see teachers empowered to make classrooms vibrant with critical thinking, creativity and real achievement. I see students flourishing when learning isn't reduced to test taking.

I am the candidate with experience overseeing the county's largest school district budget. As a school board leader, I cut administrative costs, reduced junk food in schools, supported English Language Learners, and led a coalition to defeat the Governor's attack on schools and public employees.

As your Superintendent of Schools I will take the lead supporting inclusive charter schools that offer innovative programs. I will protect the rights of parents to withhold student information from military recruiters, work with legislators for equitable funding and greater teacher compensation, and promote environmental protection, including converting school buses to bio-diesel.

After 28 years teaching and six as a school board leader, I promise to be an accessible superintendent who listens more than talks, treats everyone with respect, embraces diversity, and approaches decisions with an open mind. My mind is made up about one thing: Justice for all.
