Dear Editor:

Gov. Schwarzenegger has broken his promise to protect schools and students from harmful budget cuts. His recent budget proposals undermine the education funding protections California voters say they want through Proposition 98.

Just in the last several years, California schools have suffered more than $9.8 billion in cuts. Statewide, these cuts translate to school closures, increases in class size, layoffs of teachers and support staff, and a devastating shortage of librarians, counselors, nurses, custodians and groundskeepers.

Many schools lack basic supplies and instructional materials. Schools are cutting art and music programs, extracurricular activities are no longer affordable, after-school programs have been decimated and school maintenance is under-funded. California voters approved Proposition 98 to protect schools and students. The governor shouldn't ignore the voters, our students or our schools.

Sincerely,
Local Educator
